Vermiculite for gardening
1.What is Horticultural vermiculite
Horticultural vermiculite is a light, absorbent material that is chemically inert and odorless. It is made from flakes of a mica-like hydrated silicate of magnesium-aluminum-iron. The flakes are flash heated to 900 degrees centigrade. Water quickly evaporates as the vermiculite expands like an accordion. This process, known as exfoliation, balloons the flakes to twenty times their original size. With an essentially neutral pH of 7.0, horticultural vermiculite helps with soil aeration and retains moisture, fertilizers, other nutrients and plant treatments.
2. Horticultural vermiculite Benefits
Horticultural vermiculite is versatile, clean and sterile. While its neutral pH of 7.0 trends toward alkaline because of carbonates in the product, it does not have the pH lowering effect of peat. When combined with peat or composted pine bark, the resulting mix provides faster root growth. Because of its expanded size and light weight, it helps aerate mixes while retaining moisture and nutrients. Horticultural vermiculite is also used to bulk up mixes and lessen compaction.

Horticulture Vermiculite:1-3mm 2-4mm
4.Vermiculite properties
Heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant, well-ventilation, water preservation, poisonless, odorless, low hardness, burning-avoidness, lighter.non-asbestos ,Low density ,etc
5.Some Vermiculite features
1). Physical appearance
Vermiculite refers to a small group of minerals resembling the lamella structure of the micas. It is dark gray brown to golden brown in color and flake-shaped when dry. When heated to intense temperatures vermiculite expands in volume and its lamellae separate, and thus exfoliate
2). Moisture retention
The space created by exfoliation trap moisture.Ideal for horticultural applications, vermiculite has the capacity to retain several times its weight in water.
3). Air circulation
Vermiculite flakes are irregular in shape allowing better air circulation when exfoliated, .Widely used in horticulture to aerate soil mixes or for hydroponic cultures.
4). Low density
Exfoliation cause a great increase in volume without an increase in mass.Being extremely lightweight, vermiculite is an ideal material to lighten aggregates such as concrete, plaster, and asphalt, and to fill walls and partitions Inert and neutral PH:7-11
6.Vermiculite usage in gardening :
Blocking Mixes
Hydroponics
Micro-Propagation
Potting Mixes
Rooting Cuttings
